Dentistry – Past, Present, and Future | Dr. Ronald Hammond

Dentist Decatur

At Decatur Family Dentistry, we’re fascinated by the incredible evolution of dental care, from ancient myths to the modern, science-based practices we use today. One of the most interesting aspects of this history is the journey from the early belief in “tooth worms” as the cause of decay to the advanced techniques we now employ to maintain and restore dental health.

Early Beginnings

Did you know that the ancient Egyptians had specialized doctors just for teeth? Evidence also suggests that the Chinese were using acupuncture as early as 2700 B.C.E. to treat the pain associated with tooth decay. By 500 B.C.E., famous thinkers like Hippocrates and Aristotle were already discussing methods to treat teeth and oral diseases. They used techniques like sterilization and even red-hot wires to stabilize jaw fractures and secure loose teeth—a far cry from today’s gentle approaches!

The Dental Innovations of the 1600s and 1700s

The 17th and 18th centuries were a time of significant innovation in dentistry. In 1695, Charles Allen authored The Operator of Teeth, the first English dental textbook. In it, he recommended using a homemade toothpaste made from powdered coal, rose-water, and “dragon’s blood” to keep teeth clean. He even suggested transplanting dog’s teeth into humans and discussed wisdom teeth—a fascinating glimpse into early dental theories.

During the 18th century, Pierre Fauchard, often referred to as the father of modern dentistry, published The Surgeon Dentist. This work laid the foundation for dentistry as we know it today. Fauchard’s contributions included identifying sugar as a cause of cavities, proposing the use of braces to correct teeth alignment, and introducing the concept of a dentist’s chair light.

The Progress of the 1800s

The 19th century saw significant advancements in dental practices. In 1816, Auguste Taveau developed one of the first dental fillings using a mixture of silver coins and mercury. By 1840, pioneers like Horace Wells and Thomas Morton were demonstrating the use of nitrous oxide and ether as anesthetics, revolutionizing patient comfort during procedures. The establishment of the first dental school and the creation of the modern Doctor of Dental Surgery degree during this period also marked a major leap forward.

Scientific Breakthroughs of the 1900s

The 20th century brought remarkable progress in dental technology. The advent of electricity led to the development of electric drills, significantly improving the efficiency of dental procedures. In 1907, a method for precision case fillings was introduced, and Novocain became a common anesthetic in dental offices across the U.S. By mid-century, innovations like tooth bonding and reclining dental chairs were making dental care more effective and comfortable for patients. The 1990s saw the introduction of “invisible” braces and the first at-home tooth bleaching systems, setting the stage for the cosmetic dentistry trends we see today.
